Give a clip the partly reversed tones of a solarized darkroom print. Shadows and midtones stay as they were while the brightest areas flip toward the negative, leaving glowing contours where the two meet.

Threshold and tone reversal

Threshold sets the brightness where reversal begins, from 0 to 255. Tone Reversal sets how far the bright tones move toward the inverted value: 100% is a full flip, lower values give a subtler metallic sheen. Keep Color reverses each color channel; with it off, the output is monochrome.

Footage that works

Solarization is strongest on footage with a wide spread of tones: portraits against bright windows, sky above dark buildings, stage lighting. For a full negative, use the video negative converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does solarization do?

Tones below the Threshold keep their values; tones above it are reversed toward the negative. Bright skies turn dark and highlights on skin turn into metallic contours.

How is this different from inverting the video?

Inverting reverses every tone. Solarizing reverses only the tones above the threshold, so shadows stay natural and the picture keeps its shape.

Why do some areas flash in motion?

Pixels whose brightness hovers around the threshold switch between normal and reversed from frame to frame. A softer threshold, which the step applies by default, blends that boundary.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
