Turn footage of film negatives into a positive video. The conversion runs per frame: divide out the orange base of the film, invert, then apply exposure and color trims. The soundtrack passes through untouched.
The orange mask
Color negative film has an orange base built into every frame. A plain inversion turns that orange into a strong cyan-blue cast over the whole picture.
The Film Base color is divided out of every pixel first, so the unexposed film maps to white. Inverting then turns the border into true black and leaves the image without the cast.
Setting the film base
Scrub to a frame where the film edge, a sprocket gap, or the space between frames is in view. Pause there, open Film Base, and pick that area with the eyedropper. The preview updates on the paused frame, so the change is visible before playback starts.
Lighting drifts in hand-held captures of a light table or projector. If the cast returns later in the clip, sample the border again at that point and compare.
Exposure and color balance
Exposure scales the result by up to 2 stops in each direction, applied after the inversion. Red Balance moves between cyan and red, and Blue Balance moves between yellow and blue. Green stays fixed, which is why two sliders cover the neutral axis.
One setting applies to the whole clip, so set exposure on a frame with both a highlight and a shadow in shot.
Black & white negatives
Black & white film has no orange base, so this mode skips the mask and color trims and inverts the red, green, and blue channels directly. Exposure still applies.
The same mode inverts an ordinary color video into its negative, for a stylized look or to check a clip that was captured inverted by mistake.
Size and export time
The export defaults to 720p. Frames larger than the chosen size are scaled down before conversion, and smaller frames are left at their own size. Choose 1080p or Source size for the full resolution, and expect the export to take longer.
The inversion work is split across the processor’s cores. The progress on the export button counts source time, and a line under it reports the rendered frame rate once the file is ready.
Soundtrack
Audio is copied from the source packet for packet when the output container supports its codec, so it is not re-encoded. When the codec does not fit, the track is decoded and encoded again as AAC or Opus.
