Grade a clip the way colorists do with three color wheels: one color for the shadows, one for the midtones, one for the highlights, each at its own strength.

Shadows, midtones, highlights

The defaults start at zero strength, so the clip is unchanged until you raise an amount. Teal shadows with warm highlights give the familiar cinematic grade; a green midtone with warm highlights gives a vintage print. Balance shifts the crossover toward the shadows or the highlights.

Consistent across cuts

The grade is fixed for the whole clip, so every shot receives the same color treatment. For a simpler two-color version, use split toning video.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the frame divided?

By brightness, into overlapping shadow, midtone, and highlight masks. Each takes its color at its own strength, and the overlap keeps the transitions smooth.

Does grading change the brightness?

Only slightly. Luminance is held close to the original, so the grade reads as color rather than exposure.

How is this different from split toning?

Split toning has two zones, shadows and highlights. Color grading adds a separate midtone color and a balance control, like the three color wheels of video grading software.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.

Color Grading
