Underwater Video Color Correction

Settings are written to the URL as you change them. Nothing differs from the defaults yet.

Bring back the colors that water takes away. Reds are recovered from the other channels, the flat contrast of underwater light is stretched, and the dominant blue or green cast is trimmed.

Water type

Choose Blue water or Green water to fix the cast type for the whole clip. Detect per frame decides on every frame, which suits clips that move between very different water.

Correction and red recovery

Correction Amount blends the full correction with the original. Red Recovery sets how strongly the lost red channel is rebuilt; deep footage needs more. Contrast Recovery stretches the channels after ignoring the darkest and brightest 1% of pixels, and Warmth trims the final color.

Limits

The deeper the footage, the less red light reaches the camera, and rebuilding it amplifies noise in the red channel. Footage lit with a video light keeps real color near the camera and needs less correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water absorbs red light within a few meters, then orange and yellow. What reaches the camera is mostly blue in clear ocean water and green in lakes and plankton-rich water.

Blue water for clear sea, Green water for lakes, rivers, and green coastal water. Detect per frame chooses from each frame's channel averages, which can switch between the two mid-clip when the scene changes.

The channel stretch and red gain are measured on each frame, so they follow changes in depth and lighting. That keeps a descending clip balanced, but a large fish or diver filling the frame can shift the colors briefly.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
