Grade a clip with two colors: one for the shadows, one for the highlights. The default teal shadows and amber highlights give the complementary look of a lot of film and streaming work, since skin tones sit in the warm half.

Colors and saturation

Choose Shadow Color and Highlight Color to set the grade. The step applies each at 35% saturation, which keeps the tint subtle; Mix blends the whole grade back toward the original.

Balance

Balance moves the crossover point. A night scene with mostly dark tones takes almost all the shadow color; shift the balance toward the shadows so the highlight color reaches faces and lights.

A grade across cuts

The same curve is applied to every frame, so the grade holds across cuts and camera changes. Pair it with the matte video effect for a faded film grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does split toning work?

Each pixel's brightness decides how much of the shadow tint and how much of the highlight tint it receives. Dark areas take the shadow color, bright areas the highlight color, and the midtones a blend of both.

Does it change the brightness of the clip?

No. Luma is preserved by default, so the tints change color without lightening or darkening the picture.

What does Balance do?

It moves the point where shadows hand over to highlights. Moving it toward the shadows lets more of the frame take the highlight tint, and the other way round.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
