Pull detail out of a clip’s shadows and highlights for the crunchy, textured look of tone-mapped HDR photography. Dark areas open up, bright skies calm down, and brickwork, clouds, and faces gain local contrast.

Shadows and highlights

Shadow Recovery lifts dark regions more than the midtones. Highlight Compression brings bright regions down. Together they squeeze a high-contrast scene into a flatter range, which Local Detail then brings back to life with texture.

Local detail

Local Detail works at two neighbourhood sizes tied to the frame dimensions, so it adds punch to fine texture and broad regions at the same time. High values give the heavy HDR look of the 2010s; around 30% it reads as clarity rather than an effect.

Motion and noise

The effect is computed per frame. Compression noise in dark, flat areas gets amplified along with real detail and can crawl. Clean, well-exposed sources give the best result; lower Shadow Recovery when shadows start to boil.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It is a tone-mapping look on a standard video. The export is regular SDR, and detail that the camera clipped to white or black cannot come back.

It compares each pixel with the average of a small and a large neighbourhood and pushes it away from both. Fine texture and broad tonal regions gain contrast together. The neighbourhoods scale with the frame, so the preview and export match.

Shadow recovery and local contrast raise dark, noisy areas along with the detail. Lower Local Detail or Shadow Recovery on low-light footage.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
