Pixel Sort Video

Settings are written to the URL as you change them. Nothing differs from the defaults yet.

Melt a clip into cascading streaks of sorted color, the signature look of glitch art. Pixels in the brighter (or more colorful) parts of the frame are pulled out of place and reordered into gradients.

Threshold

Threshold decides which pixels are allowed to melt. At 200 only highlights streak; at 50 almost the whole frame does. Finding the value where the subject stays intact and the sky or background melts is most of the work.

Direction and sort key

Vertical sorting gives waterfalls, horizontal sorting gives smears. Luminance sorts dark to light, Hue sorts through the color wheel for rainbow streaks, and Saturation orders from gray to vivid.

Pixel sorting in motion

On video, runs shift every frame as light and motion change, so streaks shimmer and crawl. Locked-off shots with a moving subject against a bright background give the most readable result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each column (or row) is split into runs of pixels that pass the threshold. Within each run the pixels are reordered by luminance, hue, or saturation, which smears them into streaks while the pixels outside the runs stay in place.

Runs are found again on every frame from its brightness, so as the picture changes the runs start and stop in different places. That flicker is part of the look of pixel-sorted video.

It varies the maximum run length by position, so streaks end at different heights instead of forming a flat edge.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
