Dispersion Video Effect

Settings are written to the URL as you change them. Nothing differs from the defaults yet.

Make a subject look like it is breaking apart and blowing away. The effect finds edges in each frame, lifts a share of their pixels, and scatters them in one direction, the dust-trail look of disintegration sequences.

Edge threshold

Edge Threshold decides which edges qualify. High values pick only strong silhouettes, such as a figure against sky. Lower values let clothing, hair, and background texture fragment too, which spreads particles over the whole frame.

Direction and space

Particles need empty space to travel into. Frame the subject on the side opposite the direction, with sky or a plain wall ahead of it, and the drift reads as wind. Particles crossing a busy background disappear into it.

Particles in motion

The particle layout is redrawn on every frame, so the breakup flickers like fine dust. It follows the subject as it moves because the edges are found again in each frame. Lower Particle Amount for a subtle shimmer at the edges only.

Frequently Asked Questions

From edges. Pixels where brightness changes sharply are candidates; a seeded share of them, set by Particle Amount, fades at its source and reappears further along the chosen direction.

The selection is seeded from each frame's timestamp and advances 30 times per second of source time. The breakup shimmers like blowing dust instead of sitting on the picture as a fixed pattern.

Up to Travel Distance, as a percentage of the frame's short edge, with each particle moving a random share of that. Particles pushed beyond the frame are clipped.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
