Lens Distortion Video Effect

Settings are written to the URL as you change them. Nothing differs from the defaults yet.

Warp a clip as if it had been shot through a different lens. The remap is radial around the center: positive curvature bulges the frame outward, negative curvature pinches it inward.

Curvature and zoom

Curvature sets the direction and strength of the bend. Zoom scales the result so the curved edges fall outside the frame (above 100%) or inside it (below 100%). A barrel distortion with a zoom around 104% keeps the frame filled with no black corners.

Outside pixels

Video has no transparency, so pixels with no source are drawn black. For clips where black corners would show, choose Stretch Edge Pixels, which repeats the outermost row and column into the gap.

Barrel versus fisheye

A barrel curve at high values starts to resemble a fisheye, but it stays rectangular and keeps the edges less compressed. For the circular fisheye look of skate videos, use the fisheye video effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Positive curvature is barrel distortion: the center is magnified and straight lines bow outward, as with a wide-angle lens. Negative curvature is pincushion: lines bow inward, as with a telephoto.

It can reduce mild barrel distortion with negative curvature, since the same radial remap runs both ways. It is not calibrated to any lens, so set it by eye against a straight line in the shot.

Pincushion and low zoom pull the picture in from the edges. Black fills the uncovered area; Stretch Edge Pixels repeats the outermost pixels instead.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
