Neon Outline Video Effect

Settings are written to the URL as you change them. Nothing differs from the defaults yet.

Outline a clip in glowing neon. Every strong edge becomes a bright tube of light, and the picture behind it sinks into darkness, the look of Tron-style title sequences and music visuals.

Color and glow

Neon Color sets the tube and glow color. Glow Radius sets how far the light spreads from each line, and Intensity how bright the halo is. A cyan or magenta on a nearly black background gives the classic look.

Background dim

Background Dim darkens and tints the original frame. At 100% only the outlines remain; around 70% the scene stays faintly visible under the neon.

Footage that works

Subjects with clear silhouettes against simple backgrounds give clean outlines: dancers on a plain wall, cars against sky, product shots. Busy textures such as foliage turn into dense scribbles of light.

Frequently Asked Questions

An edge detector runs on each frame. The edges are thickened into a core tube and blurred outward for the glow, then drawn in the neon color over a dimmed copy of the frame.

The radius is in pixels on a frame with a 720 px short edge and scaled to the frame being processed, so the glow keeps its proportions in a 1080p export.

Edges are found again on every frame. Weak edges and noise near the detection limit appear and disappear. Clean footage with strong shapes gives the steadiest tubes.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
