Soften a whole clip, from a light haze to complete abstraction. Each frame is blurred with a Gaussian kernel, which spreads every pixel evenly in all directions.

Blur amount

Blur Amount sets the radius, from 0 to 40 px on a 720p frame. A few pixels take the edge off compression artefacts and noise. Around 10 px faces lose their features. At 30 px and above only color and broad light remain, the look of a background plate behind titles.

Blur mix

Blur Mix blends the result over the untouched frame. Low values give a diffused, dreamy look without losing structure, close to a soft-focus filter. Full mix with a large radius makes a clip usable as a moving background behind text or a video call overlay.

Blur and file size

A blurred frame has little fine detail, and encoders spend most of their bits on detail. The export is often noticeably smaller than an unblurred export at the same resolution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I blur only a face or one area?

No. The blur covers the whole frame. Blurring a moving region needs tracking, which this effect does not do.

Why is Blur Amount measured on a 720p frame?

The blur radius is set in pixels on a frame with a 720 px short edge and scaled to the frame being processed. A 1080p export uses a radius 1.5 times larger, so the result looks the same at any output size.

What does Blur Mix do?

It blends the blurred frame over the original. At 100% only the blur is visible; around 30% to 50% it softens skin and noise while edges stay recognisable.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
