Give a clip the faded, soft-black finish of film prints and a lot of social video. The darkest tones are lifted into a charcoal gray and the highlights roll off gently, while the midtones keep their contrast.

Fade and contrast

Fade raises the floor of the tonal range. Contrast restores separation in the midtones after the lift. Around 40% fade with contrast at 100% gives the common matte look; push fade above 60% for a washed, vintage print.

Strength

Strength blends the curve with the original, so the same look can be applied lightly across a whole sequence. Pair it with the split toning video effect to add a color cast to the lifted shadows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes footage look matte?

A raised black point, so no pixel reaches true black, combined with gently rolled-off highlights. Fade sets how high the blacks are lifted.

Why does the clip look flat?

Lifting the blacks removes depth. Raise Contrast to restore separation in the midtones without pulling the shadows back down to black.

Does the grade stay consistent across shots?

Yes. The curve is the same on every frame and does not measure the picture, so it behaves like a fixed grade applied across every cut.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
