Print a clip from a rocked copper plate. Shadows sink into dense, velvety black, highlights are burnished back to bare paper, and everything between is an irregular field of ink pits.

Grain, bite, and burnish

Rocking Grain sets the pit size. Bite sets how deeply the plate holds ink, darkening the whole print. Burnish sets how strongly highlights are polished back toward paper.

Plate colour

Plate Colour tints the ink with the source color. At 0% the print is one ink on paper; higher values bring back the clip’s colors inside the grain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mezzotint?

A print made from a plate rocked all over with tiny burrs that hold ink. The image comes from scraping and polishing areas smooth so they print lighter, which gives deep, velvety blacks.

Does the grain move?

Yes. The pits are seeded from each frame's timestamp and change 30 times per second of source time, so the texture reads as moving grain rather than a still plate.

Is the grain the same at every size?

Yes. Rocking Grain sets the pit size as a share of the frame's short edge, so the preview and export show the same density.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
