Print a clip on the front page. Each frame is screened into black halftone dots on warm, fibrous newsprint, with ink swelling into the paper.

Dots and contrast

Dot Size sets the coarseness of the screen: small dots look like magazine print, large dots like cheap pulp newspaper. Contrast separates shadows from highlights before screening, which keeps faces readable.

Ink and paper

Ink Spread merges dots in the shadows. Paper Texture adds fibre, yellowing, and speckle. For colored dots on a plain background, use the halftone video effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the halftone screen sized?

Dot Size is scaled to the frame's long edge, so the preview and any export show the same number of dots across.

What does Ink Spread do?

It lets dots swell into each other in the shadows, as on a heavily inked press run. High values merge dark areas into solid ink.

Does the paper texture move?

Yes. Paper fibre and ink specks are seeded from each frame's timestamp and change 30 times per second of source time, so the paper shimmers slightly while the dot screen stays fixed.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
