Simplify and threshold

Simplify merges small detail into larger shapes before cutting. Ink Threshold decides where solid ink ends. Together they decide whether a face reads as a bold poster or a detailed print.

Gouges and edges

Gouge Spacing sets the spacing of the carved midtone lines, and Edge Carve how ragged the shape edges are. The cuts move from frame to frame; lower Edge Carve for steadier outlines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a linocut differ from an engraving?

A linocut is a relief print: everything that should stay white is carved away and the raised surface prints solid ink. An engraving holds ink in fine lines cut below the surface. Linocuts read bold and graphic, engravings detailed.

Why do the gouge marks shift between frames?

The carving is seeded from each frame's timestamp and changes 30 times per second of source time, as if each frame were cut from a new block. That gives the restless texture of printed animation.

What does Simplify do?

It blurs the frame before carving, by a share of the short edge. More simplification gives broader, cleaner shapes that look cut rather than thresholded.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
