Risograph Video Effect

Print a clip in two riso inks. Each frame splits into a dark and a light ink, screened into halftone dots and slightly out of register, on warm paper.

Inks

Dark Ink and Light Ink set the pair. Blue and fluorescent pink is the classic combination; any strong, contrasting pair works. Intensity blends the print with the original frame.

Misregistration and roughness

Misregistration shifts the layers apart. Print roughness, dropouts, and paper noise change on every frame, which gives the restless, handmade texture of risograph animation and zine video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shadows go to the dark ink and midtones to the light ink, each screened as halftone dots over the paper color. Where the inks overlap they mix, as layered riso inks do.

It offsets the two ink layers, as on a riso print where the drums do not line up perfectly. A little gives the handmade look; a lot doubles every edge.

Dropouts, paper noise, and dot roughness are seeded from each frame's timestamp and change 30 times per second of source time, as if each frame were a separate print run.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
