Lay a clip in tiles. Each tile takes the color of the picture beneath it, grout separates the tiles, and a bevel gives each one a raised edge.

Tile style and size

Organic tiles are irregular, like stone or glass pieces set by hand; Square tiles form a regular grid. Tile Size sets the tile width, and Grout Thickness the gap between tiles.

Motion

The layout stays fixed and only the tile colors change, which gives the look of an animated mosaic wall. Larger tiles flicker less with fine motion; smaller tiles keep more of the subject.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the tile layout change between frames?

No. The tile positions are fixed for the whole clip, so the tiles stay put and change color as the picture moves.

Why are Tile Size and Grout measured on a 720p frame?

Both are pixel values on a frame with a 720 px short edge, scaled to the frame being processed, so a 1080p export has the same number of tiles as the preview.

How is this different from pixelate?

Pixelate fills square blocks with flat color. Mosaic draws separate tiles with grout lines between them, irregular shapes in the organic style, and bevelled edges that catch light.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
