Oil Painting Video Effect

Paint a clip in oils. Textures merge into strokes of flat color while the edges between shapes stay crisp, which gives each frame the look of a painted canvas.

Brush size and vibrance

Brush Size sets how much detail is merged into each stroke. Small brushes keep faces; large brushes reduce a scene to bold color masses. Vibrance raises saturation before painting, for the rich pigment of real oil paint.

Canvas and motion

Canvas Texture adds a woven surface over the paint. On video, strokes form again on every frame and shimmer slightly where the picture is noisy; clean, well-lit footage paints most steadily.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a Kuwahara filter. For each pixel it looks at four overlapping squares around it, picks the one with the least color variation, and takes that square's average. Flat areas smooth out while edges stay sharp, which reads as brushwork.

It is the filter radius in pixels on a frame with a 720 px short edge, scaled to the frame being processed, so a 1080p export is painted with the same proportions as the preview.

It is one of the heavier effects: each pixel compares four squares of neighbours, and the cost grows with Brush Size. Expect long clips at large brush sizes to take a while.

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
