Grade digital footage toward a named film stock. Each profile sets how the three color channels respond, where contrast sits, how much the blacks lift, and how coarse the grain is, so a clip graded to Portra 400 and one graded to Velvia 50 differ in more than color.
Profiles
A color negative has three separately sensitised layers, so each channel gets its own gamma and gain. That is how Portra keeps skin warm with neutral shadows, and how Superia pushes green in the midtones without tinting the whole frame. The four black-and-white stocks convert to monochrome with their own contrast and grain.
Profile Strength blends the stock with the original grade. Exposure and Contrast Trim adjust on top of the stock’s own curve without leaving it.
Grain and halation in motion
Grain is redrawn on every frame, which is what separates moving film from a still texture laid over video. Grain scales the amount the stock already carries: Delta 3200 and Superia 1600 are coarse at 100%, Ektar and Portra 160 fine.
Halation adds the red glow that forms around bright highlights when light bounces back off the film base. CineStill 800T, which has that layer removed, shows it most.
Source footage
Film emulation works best on footage with room in the highlights and shadows. Log or flat profiles converted to standard contrast first give the most film-like result. Clips that are already heavily graded or clipped to white keep that clipping under the stock.
