Brightness, contrast, and gamma

Brightness and Contrast are neutral at 100%. Gamma lifts or deepens the midtones while leaving black and white in place, which is often the better fix for dim indoor footage. Soft S-Curve adds contrast gently for footage shot flat or in log.

Order of adjustments

Set brightness first, then gamma, then contrast. For a more photographic exposure control with highlight protection, use the exposure video tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which control fixes a dark video?

Brightness first, to place the clip in the right range. If the midtones still look heavy while highlights are fine, raise Gamma instead of pushing Brightness further, which would clip the bright areas.

What does Soft S-Curve do?

It adds contrast with a curve that eases into the shadows and highlights, so blacks and whites roll off rather than clip.

Does the adjustment change between shots?

No. The same curve applies to every frame; it does not measure the picture, so cuts keep their relative brightness.

What happens to the audio?

It is copied into the export unchanged when the container can hold its codec, and re-encoded when it cannot. A note under the export button says which happened.
