Pitch without speed

Playing a clip faster raises its pitch because pitch and duration are tied together. Here they are separated: the sound is analysed, every frequency is moved by the same ratio, and the result is put back on the original timeline. The clip stays the same length to the frame.

Semitones and fine tune

Pitch moves in semitones, 12 to an octave, and Fine tune adds up to half a semitone in cents. Mix blends the shifted sound with the original, which at around 50% gives a doubled, chorus-like voice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing the pitch change the speed?

No. The soundtrack keeps its exact length and stays in sync with the picture. Only the pitch moves. To change speed and pitch together, like a tape played faster, use the video speed changer with pitch correction off.

How far can the pitch move?

Up to 12 semitones (one octave) up or down, plus 50 cents of fine tune either way. Common steps: 12 is an octave, 7 a fifth, 5 a fourth, 1 a semitone.

Why does a shifted voice sound smaller or larger?

The resonances of the vocal tract move with the pitch, so a voice shifted up sounds smaller and one shifted down sounds larger. Small shifts of 1 to 3 semitones change the voice without that effect being obvious.

Can I fix a song that is slightly out of tune with the video?

Yes. Use Fine tune in cents to nudge the whole soundtrack; 100 cents is one semitone.

What happens to the picture?

Nothing. The video stream is copied packet for packet, so the picture keeps its exact quality and the export finishes in a fraction of the time a re-encode takes. Only the soundtrack is processed and re-encoded, and a note under the export button says which audio codec was written.
