Open your camera, see the picture, and read the numbers behind it: size, frame rate, brightness, and timing. Everything is measured from the live stream the page receives, not taken from the camera’s claims.

Start the test

Press Start camera and allow access when the browser asks. With several cameras connected, a device list appears once access is granted. Changing the device, the requested size, or the frame rate reopens the stream with the new request.

Requested vs delivered

A page can only ask for a size and frame rate; the camera answers with the nearest mode it supports. The rail shows the negotiated values and the camera’s reported range, and the checks compare what arrived with what was asked for.

Resolution passes when the delivered frame is at least the requested size.
Frame rate passes at 24 fps or more presented, the point below which motion in a call visibly stutters.
Timing passes when the spread between frame arrivals is under half a frame interval. A high spread means dropped or bunched frames, often from a busy USB hub or CPU.

Exposure

Four times a second the frame is copied at 160 pixels across and its brightness averaged. The exposure check wants an average between 70 and 190 out of 255. The highlights check flags more than 2% of the frame at pure white, which usually means a window behind you. The Black stat is the share of pixels near pure black, which rises in a dark room.

The fix for most failures is light: a lamp or window in front of you, not behind.

Test all sizes

Cameras advertise a range of widths and heights but support only a handful of modes inside it. Test all sizes asks for each common size exactly, from 320 by 240 to 3840 by 2160, and marks which ones the camera accepts and at what frame rate. The stream then returns to its previous size.

Snapshot

Save snapshot downloads the current frame as a PNG at the delivered resolution, unmirrored. It is the quickest way to judge sharpness and color at full size, or to attach proof of a camera problem to a support ticket.

This page tests only the picture. Check your microphone with the mic test and your output with the speaker test before an important call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the frame rate read lower than 30?

Most webcams lengthen their exposure in dim light, and a longer exposure means fewer frames each second. A camera that negotiates 30 fps can deliver 15 in a dark room. Add light in front of you and the reading climbs.

What is the difference between negotiated and measured?

Negotiated values are what the browser and camera agreed on when the stream opened. The measured frame rate counts the frames the page actually received over the last two seconds, which is what a call or recording gets.

Why can't I get 1080p?

The camera may not offer it, or the USB port or another app may limit it. Press Test all sizes: each common size is requested exactly and marked as offered or not. Many laptop cameras top out at 1280 by 720.

What does the exposure check measure?

The average brightness of a downscaled copy of the frame, on a 0 to 255 scale, and the share of pixels at pure white. Between 70 and 190 average reads as a properly lit face and room; more than 2% pure white means a window or lamp is blowing out.

My camera does not appear. What now?

Allow camera access in the address bar's site settings, close other apps that use the camera (only one can hold it on some systems), and on laptops check for a privacy shutter or a function key that disables the camera.

Is the preview mirrored for other people too?

No. Mirroring flips only this preview, the way most call apps show your own image. Snapshots and what other people see keep the camera's real orientation.
