Generate pink noise
Download a WAV file of pink noise. The spectrum falls 3 dB per octave, so each octave carries the same total power and the result sounds even across the range rather than hiss-heavy.
Why the slope cancels out
Two things move in opposite directions. Power per hertz halves with every doubling of frequency, which is the 3 dB fall. Each octave is also twice as wide as the one below it, which doubles how much of that spectrum it collects. The two effects cancel, leaving equal energy per octave.
That is exactly how a third-octave analyser reads a signal, which is what makes pink noise the reference for acoustic measurement.
Calibration and room work
- Setting relative levels between speakers with an SPL meter.
- Measuring room response, where a flat system should draw a flat trace.
- Checking a PA or monitor path for a band that is missing or resonant.
- Burning in drivers, where even energy across the range matters more than peak level.
Reading the level
The file peaks at -12 dBFS. Noise has a much higher crest factor than a sine, so its RMS sits roughly 10 dB below the peak. An SPL meter set to slow averaging gives a steadier number than a peak reading.
