Download a WAV file of white noise. Every frequency band of equal width carries the same power, which is the property the name borrows from light.

Equal energy per hertz

The flat part is energy per hertz, not energy per octave, and bandwidth is what separates the two. The octave from 10 kHz to 20 kHz spans 10,000 Hz. The octave from 100 Hz to 200 Hz spans 100 Hz. White noise hands the first one a hundred times the power of the second, which is why it reads as hiss rather than a balanced wash.

What it suits

  • Checking a signal path for noise floor, crosstalk, or dropouts.
  • Exciting a system across the full band when a per-octave reading is not the goal.
  • Masking, where the treble weighting is the point rather than a problem.

Where pink works better

Room and speaker measurement is read per octave or per third octave. Pink noise falls 3 dB per octave, putting equal energy in each of those bands, so a flat system draws a flat trace. White noise on the same analyser rises about 3 dB per octave and buries the response you are trying to read.

Level and crest factor

The file peaks at -12 dBFS, and noise has a far higher crest factor than a sine, so its RMS sits around 10 dB below that. Set a meter expecting -12 dBFS RMS and the reading will look wrong when the file is correct.
