Generate brown noise
Download a WAV file of brown noise. The spectrum falls 6 dB per octave, twice as steeply as pink, which removes most of the treble and leaves a deep rumble.
Where the name comes from
Not the colour. Brown noise takes its name from Brownian motion: the signal is the running sum of a random walk rather than a set of independent samples. Integrating a flat spectrum is what produces the 6 dB per octave slope. Red noise is the same thing under a different name.

What it suits
- Masking low-frequency noise, where pink still sounds too bright.
- Checking subwoofer and low-end response without exciting the top of the band.
- Any test where the energy needs to sit below a few hundred hertz.
Not a measurement signal
An analyser reading per third octave expects pink noise. Feed it brown and the trace falls steeply across the whole display, which tells you about the signal rather than the system. Use pink noise for room and speaker work.
