What Slugs Are Good For
Slugs are the “web-safe” version of a title. They help you keep URLs clean, predictable, and readable.
-
Blog post and page URLs A good slug makes a link easy to scan and share.
-
CMS permalinks WordPress, Ghost, Webflow, and most CMSs store slugs as the page identifier.
-
Category paths Keep tag and category URLs consistent:
product-updates,how-to,case-studies. -
Asset and file names Great when you want a safe filename without spaces:
hero-image-summer-sale.jpg.

Tips for Best Results
-
Keep slugs short Aim for clarity, not a full sentence. If your title is long, consider trimming before slugifying.
-
Avoid dates unless they matter
pricing-guide-2026is fine if the year matters. Otherwise, dates can make URLs feel stale. -
Don’t keyword-stuff Repeating the same keyword doesn’t help and makes URLs ugly. One clear phrase is enough.
-
Hyphens are the standard Hyphens are easiest to scan in links. If you need underscores for code, that’s snake_case — not a slug.
How It Works
A slug is basically “safe text for URLs”:
-
Transliterate to English letters The tool converts characters like
á,Αθήνα,دبيinto Latin characters first. -
Lowercase + URL-safe characters The result is lowercased, and anything that isn’t
a–zor0–9becomes a separator. -
Separator cleanup Repeated separators collapse into one, and leading/trailing separators are trimmed.
Everything runs locally in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
